Previous classifications included under the name of only language disorders relating to impaired motor function of the vocal organs, thus excluding central disturbances such as aphasia. At another extreme are those involving the concept all the physical and mental disabilities that hinder verbal communication, including schizophrenia, the condition of deaf or hard of hearing, the cleft palate or changes in reading and writing, such as dyslexia and dysorthography.
